Defense
- For the stat, see Defense (Stat).
Description
You can protect yourself from any attack of the enemy in close-quarter combat by using this Defense skill. Remember that, while Defense is a way to protect your body, it also lets you retaliate. Successfully defending yourself disrupts the enemy's flow of attacks, opening themselves up to your attack. If you determine that you are on the defensive during a battle due to the one-sided attack of the enemy, you can instantly turn the tide of the battle by using this skill. Don't be discouraged even if your enemy does not lose his flow of attack, but persistently lead him on to spend his energy. After tiring out the enemy, administer a quiet and calm strike. Defense is the most effective preparation for your attacks. |
Details
- When active, it boosts the Defense and Protection of the user, and allows the user to block one enemy attack.
- Normal Attacks, Windmill, Charge, Lance Charge, Icebolt, Lightning Bolt, Human Ranged Attack, Elf Ranged Attack, Support Shot, Arrow Revolver, Mirage Missile, Crash Shot, Throwing Attack, Water Cannon when used at long range, Charging Strike, Focused Fist, Spinning Uppercut, Somersault Kick, Act 4: Rising Action, Grapple Shot, Bullet Slide, Bullet Storm, and Shooting Rush trigger Defense.
- Elf Ranged Attack and Normal Attacks from Dual Wielding or Dual Guns only causes one hit to strike rather than both.
- When Defending against a melee attack, the attacker is stunned for a short while.
- If a person is Dual Wielding and hits a defending opponent with Splash Damage, the defending opponent will receive both hits but the damage from the second hit is unaltered. However, the defending opponent is not stunned.
- Defense can only block one hit, so be wary of Multi Aggro.
- Having a shield equipped greatly increases the effects of the Defense skill.
- Small Shields reduce the total damage taken by 50%
- Medium Shields reduce the total damage taken by 70%
- Large Shields reduce the total damage taken by 100%
- Normal Attacks, Windmill, Charge, Lance Charge, Icebolt, Lightning Bolt, Human Ranged Attack, Elf Ranged Attack, Support Shot, Arrow Revolver, Mirage Missile, Crash Shot, Throwing Attack, Water Cannon when used at long range, Charging Strike, Focused Fist, Spinning Uppercut, Somersault Kick, Act 4: Rising Action, Grapple Shot, Bullet Slide, Bullet Storm, and Shooting Rush trigger Defense.
- This skill does not increase Magic Defense nor Magic Protection and therefore Magic and Alchemy attacks' damage is not reduced.
- While defending, the user will be forced to walk.
- Being hit with Defense loaded will negate stun, allowing retaliation.
- Users must wait for the Defense animation to end before they can retaliate.
- Using Melee attacks against a target with Defense loaded will result in the attacker's attack sequence being interrupted.
- It is possible to bypass this using a Magic Bolt followed quickly with another attack.
- Poison Attack and Mirage Missile's poison effect does not occur if the target successfully Defends from it.
- Using Defense with a shield passively increases Melee and Ranged Defense.
- Smash, Assault Slash, Firebolt, Fireball, Thunder, Ice Spear, Blaze, Hail Storm, Magnum Shot, Gold Strike loaded more than three times, Drop Kick, Pummel, Dischord, Wire Pull, Puppet's Snare, Act 1: Inciting Incident, Act 2: Threshold Cutter, Act 6: Crisis, Act 7: Climactic Crash, the eruption from Act 9: Invigorating Encore, Flash Launcher, Doppelganger, Shockwave, Classic Spirit Weapon Awakening, and all Alchemy, Demigod, Monster, and Pet-exclusive skills will knock down a player using Defense. However, damage taken is still reduced.
- Thunder's and Ice Spear's stun and freezing effect, respectively, are negated by a shielded target using Defense.
- A target equipped with a shield or guard cylinder with Defense loaded will not be knocked down by Magnum Shot or Gold Strike.
- Starting at Rank 5, surrounding players gain a defense bonus while Defense is active.
- Players do not need to be in the same party.
- This does not affect the user.
- However, the buff range is extremely small; they must be almost on top of the Defending player to obtain the bonus.
- Defense has a cooldown of 7 seconds, which occurs after successfully defending an attack.
- Cannot be used with a Lance equipped.
- Can be used during Windmill's animation.

Training Method
Tips
- Defense is easily trained by getting a low-leveled monster (such as a Gray Town Rat or a Brown Fox) that hits you for extremely minor damage and using Defense after every attack.
- However, such monsters do not attack aggressively and must be provoked. It is highly recommended to use Rock Throwing, Taunt, or using and cancelling Enthralling Performance as they aggravate the enemy into attacking while not harming them.
- The requirement "Successful in using a special skill to attack a defending enemy" means to use Smash, Magnum Shot, Firebolt, Water Cannon or Assault Slash on the enemy while it has Defense completely loaded.
- To fulfill "Observe the enemy using the Defense skill", you must attack the enemy (not with skills that ignore the Defense Skill) while they have Defense completely loaded.
