Barrier Spikes

From Mabinogi World Wiki

Description

Barrier Spikes.png
A skill that uses Alchemy to create defensive spikes. At higher ranks, you can attack across your own Barrier Spikes. This is a good skill for managing large groups of enemies or protecting an ally. Damage increases with higher HP. (Material: 5 Earth Crystals)

Details

Barrier Spikes change appearance depending on the rank.
From left to right: Rank N - A, Rank 9 - 6, Rank 5 - 1
  • Requires a cylinder and/or guard cylinder equipped as well as 5 Earth Crystals in the player's inventory in order to be used.
  • An Alchemy skill used to put up a wall to protect the character from incoming attacks. The wall has its own HP bar and must be "killed" in order to be knocked down.
  • Walls can only be created in Dungeons and the Shadow Realm.
  • Walls can be attacked by you and other players.
    • Players are advised to exercise caution when using Area of Effect attacks near allied walls.
    • You can gain Critical Hit Training Proficiency from attacking your own wall.
    • Destroying anyone's wall will produce no EXP.
  • Right clicking your own wall opens up a menu which gives you the option to destroy it.
  • The Barrier Spike's HP can be increased by the following means:
  • You cannot move while creating Barrier Spikes.
  • Can be loaded during Windmill's animation.
  • The Barrier Spikes will always face you when being placed and cannot be freely rotated on one spot.
  • Walls cannot be placed on monsters, players, etc.
    • Barrier Spikes will fail if anything enters the placement area during the creating animation.
  • Starting from rank 9, Barrier Spikes will reflect a portion of the attacker's damage.
    • Only melee attacks are reflected.
    • Damage reflected is still reduced by Defense and Protection stats but not by Passive Defenses.
    • 15% of the user's remaining Health is added onto Barrier Spikes' reflective damage.
      • For example, if the user has 100 remaining Health, an additional 15 damage is added to Barrier Spikes' base reflective damage.
    • Reflective damage does not score criticals.
  • Starting from rank 5, long range attacks may be used through the wall.
  • If an enemy uses Mirage Missile to attack the wall, the infection can spread to nearby targets.
  • There are certain attacks that can bypass the wall at any rank, but may or may not go through it.
    • All area of effect skills will not hit targets behind a wall, even if it is destroyed by the attack.
      • There are some exceptions to this made by certain bosses, such as Dragon Dash Attack, which will not only destroy the wall but also damage the players behind the wall.
    • Ice Spear cannot be fired through a wall, however it will still splash to targets around the wall if the wall is destroyed by the attack.
    • Fireball can travel past Barrier Spikes when fired, however the blast damage cannot.
    • Thunder can chain from the Barrier Spikes to nearby targets.
      • Attempting to cast Thunder on an enemy behind unfriendly Barrier Spikes will result in the Barrier Spikes being targeted instead.
    • Enemies can Teleport through Barrier Spikes.
    • Assault Slash used against a knocked down enemy behind Barrier Spikes will cause the user to land in front of the Spikes, but the enemy behind the spikes will still take damage.
    • Charging Strike is able to hit targets behind Barrier Spikes, however the player will not move through it.
    • It is possible to Pummel an enemy through the wall and land on the other side of it. The enemy has to be extremely close to the wall in order to perform this.
    • Puppet's Snare can attack and ensnare enemies behind Barrier Spikes, however the detachment damage will still hit the Barrier Spikes.
    • Act 1: Inciting Incident will send the Pierrot Marionette/Colossus Marionette through the wall and hit the enemy behind it.
    • Doppelganger can attack enemies behind Barrier Spikes as well as go through them.
  • Act 4: Rising Action, Bullet Storm, and Shooting Rush cannot target Barrier Spikes.
  • Barrier Spikes will stop Act 7: Climactic Crash in its tracks. In addition, Climactic Crash will not harm the Spikes.
  • It is possible to Sketch monsters/artifacts as well as tame creatures over a Barrier Spike.
  • Upon reaching 0 HP, the wall effect still persists for ~4 seconds during the collapse animation.
  • The enemy's barriers, if attacked, can count towards any training that requires a successful attack.
  • Barrier Spikes (both player and enemy created) may be Taunted by Giants.
  • Barrier Spikes (from both player and environment) will drop items due to Ingredient Hunting when killed.

Skill Issues

  • Enemy attacks may pass player Barrier Spikes regardless of its rank.
    • This appears to be influenced by the Barrier Spike's position. This also occurs when setting it up before an enemy spawns.

Obtaining the Skill

Training Method

Tips

  • "Successfully place a Barrier Spikes."
    • Enter a Ciar Beginner or Normal level dungeon and set up Barrier Spikes within. You can use Goblin Archers to deal range damage and regular Goblins for melee damage.
    • Be sure to bring enough Earth Crystals as you may have to leave to purchase more otherwise. A way of obtaining free earth crystals is to do the Rescue the Scout Shadow Mission. The quest has 3 chests at the very beginning that gives 15 Earth Crystals each (Total of 45 per run). There will be numerous wave of enemies, it's also a good way to "Damage an enemy with Barrier Spikes."
    • To fulfill requirements such as "Set up Two barriers" or "Set up Three Barriers", summon the maximum amount of barriers you can summon, destroy one, then remake it. You will fulfill both the requirements "Summon a Barrier" and "Summon Two/Three Barriers" requirements.
  • "Block a long range attack using Barrier Spikes."
    • For the requirement, "Defend against a long range attack with Barrier Spikes", the attacks Ice Storm, Thunder Storm, or Fire Storm will count towards training.
    • The Shadow Missions Battle for Taillteann I and II are quick ways to rank up by quickly installing barriers in front of each other before the beginning archers sense you, easier for elves using "Hide" to drop aggro.
    • If you have a Jungle Scout Imp or Lava Walker Imp, you can use their Natural Shield skill to safely install the barrier.
    • Rinse & repeat this process for quick ranking, but watch out for archers as their range in these missions are farther than normal.
  • "Damage an enemy with Barrier Spikes."
    • Zombie Soldiers in the Shadow Mission Their Method are useful for training "Damage Enemy with Barrier Spikes" as they have a large amount of attacks (4), and low ranked Zombies in the basic level must make several dozen attacks in order to break a barrier, allowing the requirement to be completed within minutes.
    • Zombies from this mission can also be used to safely train the "Barrier Spikes destroyed by enemy's attack" requirement, as even several low ranked zombies can destroy a high ranked barrier in under a minute. They are also slow enough that distance can easily be maintained while you set up a barrier, and they will not walk around barriers.
    • Shadow Cast City (preferably on Advanced or Hard Level) has strong monsters in groups of 5, and they only move in a linear path. These monsters are much easier to access and much safer to train barrier on.
  • "Barrier Spikes destroyed due to enemy's attacks."
    • You can attack your own barrier until it is at low HP and have the enemy finish it off. As long as the enemy gets the last blow, it will count towards your training.
      • Using a Cylinder with a negative effect on Barrier Spikes health can make training a lot faster.
    • Good monsters for this are Ogre Warriors, Giant Worms, and Heavy Gargoyles. The Ogre Warriors are the easiest to get to and use for training. Simply kill all but one of them, then set up as many walls as you can create at once in a dense formation close to the center of the room. Using the Rock Throwing action is a good way to keep the Ogre Warrior attacking the barriers.
      • Caution: even with several walls between yourself and the ogre warrior, a stomp attack can still sometimes hit you.
      • While the above monsters deal high damage but they can also walk around barriers (in Defense) to hit the user.
    • Another way to train this is to run Ghost of Partholon on basic and run it to the boss. Dullahan's Axe Throwing skill will always destroy barrier spikes upon impact, despite barrier spikes' HP.
    • Unknown Men from nearly every Saga episode are a good way to train "Barrier Spikes destroyed due to enemy attack", as they make six hits in a single regular combo and do a lot of damage.
      • They may attempt to Final Hit you when the barrier is blocking their way.
    • Crag Cows from Dorren's Request at hardmode are also a good way to train this, as they need around 5-6 hits to destroy high ranked barriers and move in a straight line most of the time.
