The Heavy Armor Mastery skill improves the effectiveness of Heavy Armors. The more you train the skill, the more efficient the equipped Heavy Armor will be. This skill can cause enemy attacks to bounce off your armor, leaving them open to attack. However, Heavy Armor reduces your DEX greatly.

Equip any Heavy Armor.
Other Methods
- Complete the quest Close Combat Basics in the Third Memoir. The skill will have training requirements up to Rank 3 completed.
Training Method
Tips
- At higher levels, Heavy Armor Mastery requires you to be hit by specific types of attacks.
- Melee attacks as well as Critical Hits are exceedingly easy to build up if you have a Mount. Go to any low level dungeon like Alby or Ciar and look around for a large Mimic pit. Get on your mount and touch all of the Mimics. They will not awaken immediately. Once you un-mount your pet, the Mimics will simultaneously awaken and aggro you together. It is also possible, if you are Human or Giant, to activate Final Hit or Wind Guard, respectively, after gathering a large group of enemies and let them continually attack you.
- For Ranged Attacks, it's the same, but look for an orb room of Goblin Archers instead. Otherwise, you may look for Shadow Archers in Defeat the Shadow Warrior (Basic), as they do low damage.
- For Magic attacks, you may want to go to Ceo Island or Coill Dungeon and attract one of the elemental Sprites. Otherwise, Rafting may be another option and allow the Hobgoblin Exorcists to strike you with their bolts. Another alternative would be Shyllien Nature Reserve's Outskirts District 1 with many Mutant Carnivorous Plants close to one another and deal rather low bolt damage. Wyverns are also a viable method as a mass of them tend to attack at a highly frequent rate, though the damage they deal might be too much for players with less defense.
- Auto Defense can be achieved by wearing armor and/or shields that provide the aforementioned stat. Transformations Heavy Stander also contributes to this. Consuming Indigo Cotton Candy provides 100% Auto Defense.
- Bandits from Commerce is another option, as the enemies use varieties of attacks (Imps use Magic, Goblin Archers use Ranged, and Humans, Goblins, Giants and Ogres use Melee). It would be wise to locate the Rookie types as they deal the lowest damage of all the Bandits.
- Alternatively, for all of these, use Dorren's Request as you can simply hit the orbs you need as required.
- One can gain all the required points for rank-up by heading to Ceo Island and get knocked around by the Sprites, fulfilling melee, magic, auto-defense, and possibly critical hit training methods.
- Ghost of Partholon is another good place to train, as the titular Ghosts dual-wield Longswords and will likely combo you for twice the number of hits. The Python Shamans that usually accompany them will frequently use Lightningbolt on you, as well as physical attacks, and so the only method of training not effectively covered with this method is "Take ranged attacks while wearing heavy armor."
