The Dark Knight, also known as Corrupt Knights of Light, is the embodiment of Human anger and sorrow funneled into the form of a warrior of darkness. Dark Knights were originally rightful Paladins who had lost their faith in Morrighan. As minions of Cichol, Macha, and Morgant, they desire chaos and destroy everything and everyone who gets in their way. Morgant claims that Dark Knights were organized to "correct" humanity's faults. The characters are described in the book Dark Knights and the Armor of Blackness.

The ability to transform into a Dark Knight is granted to the player after completing the Generation 3 scenario. After completing The Path of the Dark Knight Quest, all Paladin Skills and their ranks will be converted into the corresponding rank of Dark Knight skills: Spirit of Order is converted to Soul of Chaos, Power of Order is converted to Body of Chaos, Eye of Order is converted to Hands of Chaos, Sword of Order is converted to Mind of Chaos, Paladin Heavy Stander is converted to Dark Heavy Stander, Paladin Natural Shield is converted to Dark Natural Shield, and Paladin Mana Deflector is converted to Dark Mana Deflector. The only skill that is unaffected by these changes is Control of Darkness, as there is no Paladin equivalent.

Despite countless protests from the NPCs, becoming a Dark Knight has no impact to the mainstream storyline.

Warning: Once a player has become a Dark Knight, it is impossible to switch back to a Paladin.

Details

Dark Knight Disarm activated.
  • A Dark Knight transformation can last indefinitely. After approximately 2.5 hours of in-game time, a warning message will appear (""The power of darkness has begun to press upon my body. The armor is draining me of my life!"), and the player's Health will start to drain, at the rate of 10 HP/sec, which when attacked, the drain will pause until the animation of being attacked has ended, then it will continue at its normal pace. Once health reaches 0 or Deadly, the transformation will end. Players may cancel this drain by un-transforming, or choose to prolong the transformation by drinking Life Potions or HP Elixirs, receiving Healing, Party Healing, or Restful Wind.
    • For each age after 10 transformation time is decreased by 2 seconds; every additional rebirth adds 7 seconds.
    • Life Drain cannot be used under the Disarm phase.
    • If Mana Shield is used during the Disarm phase, HP will still be drained rather than MP.
    • Demigod's HP Recovery effect will be canceled during Disarm.
    • Respite's HP Recovery directly conflicts with Disarm, reducing the HP loss, halting it, or completely negating it while recovering HP based on Respite's rank.
  • Dark Knight bonuses to Strength, Dexterity, and Intelligence are subject to a random modifier. Each Dark Knight starts out with 100 additional Str, Dex, and Int base at a 100% roll, increasing to 200 additional Str, Dex, and Int at a 100% roll if you are rank 1 of that respective skill. One stat out of Strength, Dexterity, or Intelligence will get an enhanced bonus of 180% of normal, one will get an added bonus of 60% of normal, and one will get the added normal bonus. Which one receives the modifier upon each transformation is random, but may be affected by the ranks of Body of Chaos, Hands of Chaos, and Mind of Chaos.
    • There are 4 possible modifiers from the transformation, as two never occur.
      • 60% of STR bonus from Body of Chaos, 100% of DEX bonus from Hands of Chaos, 180% of INT bonus from Mind of Chaos
      • 60% of STR bonus from Body of Chaos, 180% of DEX bonus from Hands of Chaos, 100% of INT bonus from Mind of Chaos
      • 100% of STR bonus from Body of Chaos, 180% of DEX bonus from Hands of Chaos, 60% of INT bonus from Mind of Chaos
      • 180% of STR bonus from Body of Chaos, 60% of DEX bonus from Hands of Chaos, 100% of INT bonus from Mind of Chaos
      • 180% STR, 100% DEX, 60% INT and 180% INT, 100% STR, 60% DEX will never occur.
    • The secondary bonuses (Balance from Body of Chaos, Injury from Hands of Chaos, Critical from Mind of Chaos) are also subject to the 60%/180% modifiers.
    • HP, MP, and Stamina boosts are also randomized.
      • HP and MP will always at least be equal to a Paladin's of equal rank, up to a max of the amounts listed in the table below. The amount received is random and varies with each transformation.
      • The Stamina bonus for a particular transformation is based upon how much Stamina a Paladin of equal rank Spirit of Order would have received. The formula is: Paladin Equivalent Stamina - [(HP Increase + MP Increase) / 2] = Dark Knight Stamina Bonus.
      • However, a Dark Knight will never have as much stamina as a Paladin of an Equal Rank.
    • Note: A Dark Knight does not receive 60% - 180% of their own base stats. They receive that % modifier of the transformation's base stats (e.g. A Dark Knight with Rank F Body of Chaos has 100 base Strength, and the player has 250 base Strength. They will only get +60, +100, or +180 Strength; original stats have no effect on this.). Therefore a Dark Knight's Strength, and Dexterity will always be less than a Paladin of an equal rank, unless a 180% roll is received.
  • Dark Knight status boosts are added on top of the player's base stats. Titles equipped prior to transformation will not take effect while transformed.
  • It is not possible to gain any of the accomplishment titles that involve stats while transformed (e.g. The Strong - 200+ Str, The Skillful - 200+ Dex)
  • Taming Wild Animals and Transformation Mastery may not be used while transformed as a Dark Knight.
  • A bug has been observed: The sound of the Dark Knight's Transformation cannot be heard during cutscenes.
    • Though not actually a bug, more the sound of a Dark Knight transformation is only linked to the cutscene of the transformation. An internal file that controls Visual and Audio effects in fact doesn't have the sound effects active for the transformation, and so no sound can be heard from other player POVs.
  • It is impossible to un-train Dark Knight-based skills, even with Skill Reset Capsules.
  • Players transformed into Dark Knights are not allowed to enter the Albey Black Orb Dungeon, Albey Pendant of the Goddess Dungeon, or Barri Mythril Mine Dungeon. Furthermore, they will not be allowed to transform while inside those dungeons.
  • Dark Knights bear different Two-Handed Sword, Bow, and Wand animations compared to a Human/Paladin.
  • If you happen to be transformed into a Dark Knight when you rank Soul of Chaos through a form change threshold (e.g., Rank 6 to Rank 5), your form will actually change while you are transformed (e.g., Black Knight to Chaos Knight). The transform timer will not reset, however.
    • All your bonus stats will reset to a 100% bonus amount during skill ranking.
  • There are several pets that will transform with you as a Dark Knight. They are the Bombay, Bengal, and the Siamese.
    • When the master transforms using Soul of Chaos, the pet will transform as well, and it will gain a title to match its master.
    • While transformed, the pet's stats increase by 20% of the increase gained by the master.
      • For example, if the master has Rank 1 Body of Chaos, the master gains either 120, 200, or 360 Strength, depending on the modifier. In this case, the pet would receive 20% of what the master gains, either 24, 40, or 72 Strength, depending on which modifier the master receives.
    • Note that the pet does not actually possess any Dark Knight transformation skills. The transformation is solely tied to the pet's Special Ability and in turn to the master's Dark Knight skills. You cannot transform while playing as the pet, and you cannot make the pet transform other than by using Soul of Chaos yourself.

Skill Ranking

For ranking Dark Knight skills, you must use points gained from leveling. Each level gives the player 10 points, which can either be kept in Soul of Chaos for advancement, or distributed to any of the other skills. At rank F, each skills requires 100 points (10 levels) to rank. At rank E, they require 110, and so on.

  • Note: When distributing points to skills, they are taken away from Soul of Chaos, and cannot be taken back from the skill they are sent to.
    • So to get each skill to rank E would require 800 points, or 80 levels.

Appearance

  • Dark Knights are black and have no real visible color change, with the exception of the Black Knight.
    • Like the Paladin, color-specific areas (specifically, the hair) on the Black Knight are determined by the color of Robe the player is wearing. Otherwise, the color is that of the player's name. Sometimes, if the player is not wearing a robe, the color-specific areas will be that of the player's clothing color.
  • The appearance changes based on the rank of Soul of Chaos.
