Mysterious Mail

A package meant for Emain Macha was sent to me, of all people! Can you help me out? - Austeyn

Welcome welcome! I do apologize for bothering you, but I have a bit of a conundrum on my hands. A package was misdelivered to me, you see, but I was too busy with my accounting to send it to the right name.
This was meant for someone in Emain Macha named H... Hm. The rest of the name is smudged. You'll have to find someone whose name begins with H.

(You head over to Emain Macha to deliver the package.)

Galvin
Hello there! What can I do for you?

H, H.... H? Yes, I think I can help you.

(Galvin gives you a big, mischievous grin.)

I don't normally give out information for free, but I like you. I hope you'll remember this next time I ask for a favor...
The only person whose name starts with H is the owner of the Puppet Shop. You'll probably find him working on his toys in his workshop, just south of the castle.

(You head over to the place and talk to the first employee you see.)

What are you looking for?

The boss isn<t here just now. Leave it here, and I'll make sure he gets it.

The Puppeteer

Do you know who sent the package you delivered? Please drop by so we can speak in person. - Huw

This package... Who sent it? Who sent you? Answer me!

Sorry. I'm sorry. I just...
Let's start over. I'm Huw, the owner of this workshop. We craft puppets and sell them here.

Good. Now that that's out of the way, can we get back to my question? Who sent this package?

I see. I was hoping you'd know, since there's no information on the package. This locket was inside, you see. It was a gift from an old friend who disappeared a long time ago...

Shadow Mission: Huw's Childhood 1

(A long time ago, back in Tir Chonaill, a younger Huw sits on the southern bridge with his legs dangling off. A group of three other kids appear nearby, and one of them throws a water balloon at the child. As he looks back at them, they laugh, and then run away.)

Huw
...

(The kid sits back down.)

Huw
...

(A new kid appears by Huw.)

Friend What're you doing here by yourself?

Huw
You wanna fight? Stop bugging me!

(The kid hits Huw.)

Friend
Hmph. Just 'cause you got hit by a water balloon, doesn't mean you have to be a grump!

Huw
Don't call me a grump, jerk! Shoo!

Friend
What, you going to sit around by yourself all day? Boring! There's lots of fun stuff to do out here!
C'mon, let's play. I'll show you all kinds of cool stuff!

(After calming down, Huw runs off after the kid.)

(The kids move to the fields with sheep.)

Kid
You ever make a paper airplane before? It's super fun!

Extra Dialogue (Speaking to the Kid)

Kid
I love paper airplanes. Aren't they incredible?

(As the children make paper airplanes and throw them, wolves appear.)

Kid
Ah! Wolves!
They'll kill all the sheep. Help me chase 'em away! You have that weird stick with you, right? Hit the wolves with it!

(The young Huw defeats the wolves with his Control Bar.)

Kid
Wow! Awesome! What is that thing?

Huw
This? It's just my Control Bar... Father made it for me.

Kid
What's a Control Bar? And what's with all the strings on it?

Huw
Control Bars are supposed to be used to control a puppet. The strings attach to the arms and legs of the marionette, and...

Kid
Wow! You're so smart! Awesome!

Huw
Nobody's ever called me awesome before...

Kid
Then I'm gonna call you awesome all the time! All right, Mr. Awesome?
Oh, it's getting dark. We should head home. Meet here tomorrow, okay? Uh, what's your name, anyway?

Huw
Huw. My name is Huw.

Kid
Okay, Huw. See you tomorrow!

Huw
S-see you!

We were very close when we were young...
Would you mind doing me a small favor? Find out who sent this.
It must be my old friend. It must! Even if I'm wrong, whoever sent this must know something.
Take the locket. It might help. And here's the packaging, for good measure.

(How hands you the packaging. He also hands you a locket.)

Returning to Sender

Austeyn was the first person to receive the package. He might know where it came from.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Here, I've set aside a little reward for your efforts.

Huh. It won't be easy to figure out who sent this, but I'll give it my best. Keep in mind, I wouldn't do this for just anyone! But you aren't like the others.
This might take a while. In the meantime, would you be so kind as to fetch me some milk? I'm parched! Here's an empty bottle.

(You go get Austeyn what he requested.)

Nothing beats fresh milk!

I'm getting to it! Just give me a moment... *Gulp gulp!*
Warm milk, straight from the udder! Now THAT hits the spot! As for your package, I don't know who sent it, exactly. I do know that it came from Tir Chonaill, though.
Perhaps Chief Duncan knows who sent it. Hardly a thing happens in that town of his without his knowing.

(Austeyn scrunches up his face.)

Ugh... Maybe that milk was a little TOO fresh...

Huw Who?

Austeyn suggests you ask Duncan about the strange package.

Duncan
Ah, (Character Name)! What can I do for you today? (Duncan gives you a big smile.)
Wait, don't say it. I can tell just by looking at you. You have a question for me, don't you?

Huw? Huw. Huw, Huw, Huw. The name rings a bell, but... Oh, I know! A family came to stay here a long time ago. They had a little boy named Huw. The poor lad's mother was sick...
You say he's a puppet maker now? Must be following in his father's footsteps. Why do you ask?

(Huw and his friend are in the Tir Chonaill Square, with Duncan looking over. Huw is demonstrating puppetry to the other.)

(The puppet Huw is controlling makes a wide gesture.)

And it moves like that!

(The friend applauds.)

Wow! Awesome!

Huw
Aw, it's nothing.
Anyone can do this. Wanna give it a try?

Friend
Nah, I'll just watch. No way I could move it as good as you.

Huw
You really think so? Heh heh.

Friend
Now what do you wanna do?

Huw
I know! Let's play puppet tag.

Friend
What's that?

Huw
You make the puppet move like this, see... Then you try to catch it and knock it down!

Friend
Sounds fun. Let's do it!

Huw
Okay! Ready... Set...!
Wait, wait! Before we start...


Huw
This is for you.

Friend
A locket? What's this for?

Huw
Father says you should share the most precious things with your best friend.
This locket's the most precious thing I have. I want you to have it.

Friend

Huw
Obviously... It's 'cause you... Um...

Kid All I have to do is knock this puppet over, right? Let's get started!

Extra Dialogue (Talking to the kid)

(Huw and the kid play puppet tag.)

Kid This is so much fun! Let's do this again tomorrow!
Ah... It's time to go again. I wanna stay and play more, but I guess we can play more tomorrow. See ya!

Huw didn't get along with the other children when he first arrived. I was quite worried about him... But at some point, he cheered up on his own and I didn't have to worry so much.
Come to think of it, you ought to ask Bebhinn about your mystery package. She handles most of the post in and out of town.

Anonymous Delivery

Duncan says you have some questions for me? Come on by, I always work late. - Bebhinn

You're trying to find out who sent this package? Easy. It was me.

Bebhinn
Huw who? Never met him. Sure, I sent the package, but only because someone left it in front of the bank when I came in one morning. There was a letter, too.

(Bebhinn pulls an open letter out from under her desk.)

Bebhinn
Here. All it says is 'For H, in Emain Macha.' If you want, you can have the letter. I'm happy to put this whole business behind me.

(You take a closer look at the letter.)

Shadow Mission: Huw's Past

(Huw plays with a dog in the Tir Chonaill fields. The three kids from before come in and gang up on the dog. Huw tries to interrupt the kids.) Huw
No! Don't...!

(The dog runs away in fright. The kids laugh at a crying Huw.)

Town Kid 1
Hahaha! Serves you right, idiot!

Town kid 2
Not even that puppy wants to hang out with a freak like you!

Town kid 3
What's a matter? IF you love your stupid dog so much, go find him!

(The three kids run away, while the friend runs to Huw.)

Friend
Huw? What's wrong?!

Huw
They... They made Alph... *Sob!*

Friend
Alph? Your dog? What's wrong with Alph?

Huw
H-he ran... away from town... *Sob!*

Friend
Hey, snap out of it!
Let's go find Alph I'll help.

(The two kids run to Dugald Aisle, chasing after the dog.)

Into the Woods

The memory of the letter showed a dog running into Ulaid Forest. Search there.

(You find a dog in Ulaid Forest.)

(This dog looks like ALph, the dog from Huw's memory. He wags his tail excitedly as you approach. It looks hungry.)

If the player doesn't have slices of meat in their inventory

(You don't have anything to feed the dog. Get some meat in town.)

(You've got some meat in your bag.)

Shadow Mission: Incident in Ulaid

(The two kids run into Ulaid forest, where they find the dog.)

Huw
Alph!

(The friend turns around.)

Friend Ah! Bear!

(The two kids manage to fend off the bear. When they reconvene, the dog isn't here anymore.)

Friend
Alph ran away again... He's gotta be around here somewhere. Don't worry!

Huw
What do we do if the bear comes back...?
Let's get Alph home.

Friend
Okay.

(The bear suddenly runs back into the kids, about to attack.)

Friend
Watch out!!

(The friend takes a hit from the bear, knocking him out. Huw collapses soon after.)

(MISSION END)

Extra Dialogue (Interacting with the dog again)

(It pants loudly and watches other animals passing by.)

Tracy
I have no work for you right now. What is it?

> Prompt: Something happened in the forest...

Tracy
Yeah, well, people are attacked by bears all the time. What about it?

Tracy
Well now. That does ring a bell. All right, I'll tell you what you want to know...
If you bring me 5 pieces of Firewood! Ha!

(You bring the firewood to Tracy.)

Tracy
That's the Firewood I asked for, all right. Good. The place you're looking for is just over that way.

(Tracy points to a pile of lumber in the forest.)

(There's something strange next to this pile of lumber.)

> Prompt: Examine

Shadow Mission: The Friend's Identity

(A group of bears have appeared!)

(You defeat the bears. As you are moving on, behind you, one of the bears you fell rises up, and looks to strike you from behind. Huw's friend rushes forward.)

Friend
NO!!

(Huw's friend takes the hit, knocking him back down. You deal with the bear, and move to the child's side.)

Friend
Huw...? Is that you...?
The locket... You brought it here?
I was so happy when you gave it to me. But it's important to you... You should keep it....
Y'know, I don't think I can play with you anymore... Heh... heh...
All the good times we had...
I'm glad we got to be friends. We can't play together anymore, but don't be sad...
I want you to be happy...
Thank you.
Thank... you... Thank...

(The friend's shape turns to that of a mossy marionette, unable to move anymore.)

(Huw stares at the puppet for a long while.)

Huw
My father made this puppet for me when we were visiting Tir Chonaill for mother's health...
Those were tough days. I used to blame father for everything that happened to us...

Did my father's love do this? Or was really that delusional...?
I can't make sense of any of this...

(Huw frowns.)

Huw
That fool. How am I supposed to be happy here, by myself?

(Huw stares at the puppet for a long time.)

Huw
Thank you, (Character Name).
You've given me new purpose in my craft.
I really... Just, thank you.

Hide the truth

Huw
So he showed up, helped you, and left without a word?!
Couldn't he have come to see me, at least...?
Whenever mother was sick, he was there for me. Because of him, I wasn't lonely as a kid. But after he went into the forest, I never saw him again.
No one in town remembered him, either. After I took over the shop, I tried to find him, but I never got any leads...
Maybe I was naive to think I could find anything...
...
If he doesn't want to see me, I guess that's that.

Did my friend ask you to give me this? Why? What is that fool thinking? Heh...

Afraid Not.

(Huw gives you a heartbroken look.)

It's not your fault. Honestly, I've been looking for my friend for years now. I've even hired professional adventurers to search for him and asked for help from the guards.
No luck this time, either.
But that won't stop me. I won't give up 'til I find him!

(Huw notices the old puppet in your hand.)

Huw
Mind if I take a look at that puppet?

(Huw takes the puppet.)

Huw
My, my. This puppet has seen better days, hasn't it? See where the wood's rotted, here and here?
Would you let me work on it? I know it's not much of a reward, but I'll make this into a puppet you can be proud of. This won't take but a minute.

(Huw goes into the workshop and comes out moments later.)

Huw
Here you go. The damage was extensive, so it's a bit fragile, but at least it's usable now.
