Glas Ghaibhleann (Family)

Basic Information

Glas Ghaibhleann is a monster that once terrorized Erinn in the past, according to Duncan. It is the final boss of Generation 1 and reappears as a mid-boss in Generation 9.

Mainstream Story

Generation 1: Advent of the Goddess (Spoilers)

Glas Ghaibhleann is mentioned in The Book of Revenge, Vol. 3 it will answer the Fomor's pleas of revenge. The book The Embodiment of Destruction, Glas Ghaibhleann, mentions how to create a Glas Ghaibhleann; it is then believed that Mores, the author of The Book of Revenge, is planning to reconstruct Glas Ghaibhleann.

When The Three Lost Warriors (Tarlach, Ruairi, and Mari) travel to Tir Na Nog, they witness the incomplete body of Glas Ghaibhleann and learn of the Fomors plan.

In present day, upon the arrival of the Milletian, Tarlach and Morrighan plead them to destroy Glas Ghaibhleann before it destroys Erinn.

After the Milletian arrives in Tir Na Nog, they meet Dougal, who later reveals to be the soul of the Glas Ghaibhleann through a process called "Added Soul Phenomenon" in which according to The Embodiment of Destruction, Glas Ghaibhleann, when a Glas Ghaibhleann is summoned, its soul is separated from its original body and either falls into another body or becomes an entirely different being. Dougal requests the destruction of his original body so his soul may be set free.

Upon the defeat of Glas Ghaibhleann, Mores and Cichol, a Fomor god who orchestrated the creation of Glas Ghaibhleann by tricking Mores to help him, turn against each other and argue over the destruction of Glas Ghaibhleann. Mores states that he was aware of being tricked by Cichol and weakened Glas Ghaibhleann in response, but Cichol anticipated this. The body of Glas Ghaibhleann then explodes, and a darkness flows from its destruction, bringing Tir Na Nog and Erinn much closer together, allowing Cichol's forces to invade Erinn more easily.

Oddly, there are no signs of Dougal's soul leaving his human body and going back to its original world. He mentions that his soul has stayed in this body for too long and that he cannot return.

Generation 9: Alchemist (Spoilers)

This part of the current article contains spoilers.

Glas Ghaibhleann is spotted by Leymore and Cai in the Shadow Realm in which it is attacking a Tower Beacon. Leymore states that Glas Ghaibhleann was supposed to be destroyed by Milletians back in Generation 1, but Cai thinks it is most likely revived by Alchemy.

Glas Ghaibhleann is then spotted by the Milletian, which is attacking a Shadow Taillteann building. It then spots the Milletian, but is repelled by Fallon's Ice Mines.

Glas Ghaibhleann is once again spotted in Shadow Abb Neagh and is defeated by the Milletian, with its body vanishing. Tiamat shows up and wonders how the Milletian had defeated Glas Ghaibhleann.

Notes & Advice Notes It can summon Light Gargoyles in amounts of 1-6. They spawn in a hexagonal pattern around Glas, but if a wall is in the way, fewer will be summoned. It will only summon them if there are no other gargoyles alive and he is aggroed on someone. It has an extremely fast natural HP recovery, so it must be wounded in order for progress to be made if you cannot deal out a heavy amount of damage quickly. Despite possessing Advanced Heavy Stander, Glas is only immune to knockdown. Can be snared by Puppet's Snare. Advice A high ranked Critical Hit is beneficial when using any skills to deal damage. A high level, fully charged Thunder or Fireball can take Glas out with one shot. Rank 4+ Magnum Shot is helpful for wounding and damaging. You can Chaincast with Rank 5+ Firebolt, but be sure you have a heavy stock of mana potions. Alternatively, you can have your team burn Seal Scrolls and everyone can Final Hit Glas, but be cautious as the rest of the gargoyles can aggro you. A player with Rank 1 Windmill or two or more players with at least Rank 5 Windmill can handle Glas. Method: One person runs into the boss room and forces Glas to spawn Light Gargoyles, while the other two people stay in the normal dungeon room outside the boss room, with Windmill loaded. The person spawning the Gargoyles lures Glas back into the small room, past the two Windmillers. Windmill Glas into a corner, which is fairly easy as he is quite large, then take turns Windmilling until he dies. Usually takes about 5 minutes, if not less, with high critical. Non-archer characters should burn Seal Scrolls dropped by the Gargoyles to gain invincibility and 100% wound rate in order to deal damage. Another strategy is to surround Glas with players and perform Zero Shot until he dies. However, this method NEEDS timing and the archers CANNOT miss. Only works with rank 1 Ranged Attack or Arrow Revolver. Seal Scroll burning is advised. Due to their reduced loading time, a single elf at any rank Ranged Attack can pin Glas until their arrows run out. Another method would be to lure Glas into the small room before the boss room and snare him on a campfire, allowing him to be shot repeatedly without being able to reach the player(s).

Notes & Advice Notes Like G1, it has a very high HP recovery rate. Summons several Crag Cows which have a 100% wounding rate. Unlike the G1 version's Light Gargoyles, these minions do not drop Seal Scrolls. When you use Wind Blast three times in a row against the summoned Crag Cows, they will become "confused" and attack Glas Ghaibhleann, wounding it. After some time, the Crag Cows will return to normal and resume attacking you again. After it is killed, Glas Ghiahbleann will appear upright but not move. This is because it has no death animation. Advice Separate Glas Ghaibhleann from its Crag Cows as they can provide more trouble with their 100% wound rates. Using weapons with high wound rates or archery is the standard method of fighting it. If neither method above is available to your disposal, resort to using Wind Blast on the Crag Cows to wound it. However, be aware of the skill's cooldown which triggers after use.

Trivia

• The book The Embodiment of Destruction, Glas Ghaibhleann explains that the creature must be summoned with a skeleton of its own bones (which, paradoxically, come from another world). If all of the bones cannot be collected to reform its skeleton, artificial bones can be created with Adamantium (a metal that nullifies all magic used against it).
  • Glas Ghaibhleann is not immune to magic, both because not all of its bones are made of Adamantium and because a special sample of ancient magic is used to nullify some of the Adamantium's power.
    • It does possess Mana Deflector of the lowest rank, perhaps due to the partial protection it provides.
  • Adamantium, Adamantine, or Adamant is a famous fictional metal. The word is found in many languages (Greek: ἀδάμας, meaning indomitable; Latin: adamās, meaning inflexible; English: adamant, meaning unyielding; etc.). It is strongly associated with Diamonds and steel; it is sometimes associated with gold and lodestones.
• Glas Ghaibhleann is the name of an Irish mythological cow which was famous for its ability to produce endless milk.
  • Glas is a Modern Irish word for the color green, though because of the historical difficulty in distinguishing between blue and green the word could mean green, blue, or gray.
  • Ghaibhleann's meaning is uncertain. Ghai could be the word gamhain (meaning calf). Bhleann could be the word baineann (meaning feminine). Other translations suggest ghaibhleann means of the smith, often specifying some named smith.
  • G9's battle against Glas Ghaibhleann has Glas summon a group of Crag Cow, perhaps alluding to Glas' bovine nature.
• Generation 1's Glas Ghaibhleann is missing part of one wing. Generation 9's Glas Ghaibhleann has both wings intact.
  • It is possible that G1's Glas Ghailbhleann's damaged wing is caused by Mores' efforts to undermine the summoning after he realized "Morrighan" was an imposter.
  • G9's Glas Ghailbhleann is not a real, summoned Glas Ghaibhleann (according to Leymore there was no associated spirit effect).
    • Additionally, the Glas Ghailbhleann does not explode on death. While G1's explodes violently and damages the fabric of reality, G9's simply vanishes.
• Despite having a death animation as shown in cutscenes, Generation 9's Glas Ghaibhleann appears standing up-right and frozen in place when killed outside of the cutscene. It's possible that both G1 and G9's Glas Ghaibhleann's death animation was never created.
  • The Transformation Diary version of Glas Ghaibhleann's size is shorter than the boss version. Skills are limited to only Defense, Counterattack, and Windmill. Unfortunately the transformation will cancel upon being hit. The reason might be because the boss has no knockdown motion.
