Description

Mariota "Mari" Gwydion was one of The Three Lost Warriors, along with Ruairi and Tarlach. She was ten years old, the youngest of the three; her youthful and innocent behavior made her beloved in the hearts of her two older companions. She was also talented in archery.

Mari had no memory of her birth parents, only acknowledging that Duncan adopted her.

Mari went along with her friends to Tir Na Nog in an attempt to rescue the Goddess Morrighan, but disappeared.

Mainstream Story

Past (Spoilers)

During the Second Battle of Mag Tuireadh, her father Mores engaged in a fierce battle against a relentless wizard Jabchiel. Upon hearing the news of Mores' victory, the feudal Lord of Emain Macha arranged assassins him and his family. It is later revealed that the feudal lord at that time was Ruairi's father, unknown to any of them, blinded by the fame and glory he could achieve by taking Mores' credit.

His plan to wipe out the Gwydion family failed when her mother Shiela successfully created an escape route for Mari after she noticed approaching assassins. The infant was sent to an old acquaintance of Shiela, Duncan, by a pair of brown and white deer along with a letter and a broken torque. The letter requested Duncan to assist Mari to retrieve her lost memory once she became an adult so that she would know the truth of what occurred. Shiela promised that she would embed her memory on the torque for Mari, in case she were killed.

Thereafter, Mari grew up in Tir Chonaill as Duncan's grandchild never knowing the truth about what happened to her real parents. Shiela is most likely the one who cast a memory-sealing spell on her daughter; During the Generation 1 storyline, Tarlach points out Mari's symptoms are similar to the effects of Druid's spell Mores was able to enchant, often for the subject's benefit. Mari is aware of the fact that she's suffering from amnesia; she claims to have problems remembering past events.

At the age of 10, Mari later encounters Tarlach and Ruairi for the first time on her way to Alby Dungeon to accomplish her school assignment given from Ranald. While raiding a dungeon together in a group, Mari grew attached to both Tarlach and Ruairi over their passion for adventure. She voluntarily joins the team when Tarlach conducts an investigation into the cause of abnormal activities happening to the dungeon and field monsters, as well as rescuing Morrighan from Tir Na Nog, hoping she will be able to get her memory back if she meets the goddess.

Thanks to Tarlach's continuous effort, they arrive at Albey Dungeon in search for the goddess who asked Ruairi for assistance. As they deal with incoming monsters to enter the final room of Albey dungeon, the Dark Lord appears before them. After he is seemingly defeated, he recovers himself instantaneously and stands once again. The Dark Lord prophesied a curse placed upon each of the legendary warriors before disappearing.

Upon discovering the truth about the revival of Glas Ghaibhleann, Mores appears before the three and commands the Dark Lord to seize them alive. After Mari's name is shouted, Mores orders his troops to stop. However, fearing the three warriors will ruin his grand scheme, Cichol disguised as the goddess Morrighan orders him to slay them all instead. Tarlach and Ruairi try their best to protect Mari, but they are all knocked out unconscious at the end. However, it was never revealed what had happened Mari; it is most likely that she died in the encounter.

The former Mari no longer exists in the world of Erinn, but she was reborn as Nao. Apparently, in this case, Mari learned everything about her past but was unable to handle it (explaining why she refuses to talk about her history). Duncan mentions that Mari and an unidentified Goddess merged using the process of Lia Fail to become who she is now. Duncan, Morrighan, and later the Milletian are the only ones who know the story behind Nao.

Mari still maintains frequent contact with Duncan; she assists Morrighan by calling upon the souls from other dimensions and guides them to Erinn.

Generation 1: Advent of the Goddess (Spoilers)

Mari's past is uncovered by the Milletian, and after they pick off where The Three Lost Warriors left off in rescuing Morrighan and defeating Glas Ghaibhleann, Nao appears, who is revealed to be Mari by Morrighan, and returns the Milletian back to Erinn while mourning the death of her father Mores.

Mari is briefly mentioned in Ruairi's recollection of how he discontinued his Paladin training.

Generation 3: Dark Knight (Spoilers)

Tarlach learns from the Milletian that Mari had died and was reborn as Nao. When Tarlach used the special Holy Potion of Lymilark, he was able to see Mari's new body. The druid asked the being many questions about the Milletians and had written them into his Record.

In Baol, Ruairi saw Nao and recognized her as Mari, however she says nothing in the entire scenario.

The Saga: Iria (Spoilers)

Mari is mentioned during the recap of the story of The Three Lost Warriors, as "The Archer, whose destiny lay in the hands of the Goddess." It is revealed that she is now Nao with a new look, name, and destiny, and had witnessed her father's death.

Surprisingly, there are images of an "older Mari" during the first 40 seconds of the video. Whether this was an made to add a dramatic effect to the retelling or not is unknown.

• Previously, Mari in the Generation 1 Quest Clear Rabbie Dungeon had a 'Prototype' version of Arrow Revolver; the Prototype requires each shot needs to be manually loaded, much like Icebolt.
  • This was changed to the official version as of the Generation 16, Season 2 Update.
• During the G1 RP Quest Mari had Rank F Musical Knowledge, Rank D Rest, First Aid, Counterattack, Rank C Playing Instrument, Smash, Rank B Defense, Rank A Critical Hit, Rank 9 Magnum Shot, Combat Mastery, and Rank 7 Ranged Attack.
• Mariota is a Scottish variant of the name Margaret (meaning pearl). Alternatively, Mari is a Welsh variant of the name Mary. Mary is itself a variant of the name Miriam (likely meaning beloved).
• Gwydion is a Welsh name from gwyddon (meaning wizard or scientist) or gwyddion (meaning trees).
  • The combination of wizard and trees suggests the image of a Druid, not unlike Mari's true father.
