Basic Information

The Caliburn was a sacred object left behind by Aton Cimeni, who used it to create Erinn. After its purpose was served, Aton Cimeni gave the Caliburn to a man named Partholon, and the people of the Partholon Kingdom. Partholon then used it to create the Caliburn Altar and guarded the Caliburn at all costs. However, during the Second Battle of Mag Tuireadh, the altar fell into the hands of the Fomors.

Once the Caliburn Altar was returned, the world was at peace. However, the Caliburn itself disappeared from the Shadow Royal Castle and threatens Erinn. Cichol states that Caliburn itself could bring destruction to Erinn.

After continuing being cycled between Cai, the Fomors, Neamhain, Jenna, and the Python Knight, the Caliburn, in the form of Brionac finally ends up with Milletian and accepts them as its rightful wielder.

Mainstream Storyline

Generation 9: Alchemist (Spoilers)

Cai somehow acquires the Caliburn through Alchemy. According to Elatha, Cai has always had the Caliburn in his possession. He then used it, along with an alchemy crystal, to bring Leymore back to life after he was killed by Claimh Solas, at the cost of his own soul.

Generation 10: Goddess of Light (Spoilers)

The Caliburn possesses Cai and endows him with unthinkable powers, such as using alchemy without the use of a Cylinder. According to Elatha, the Caliburn is using Cai to perform actions to bring about Neamhain's return. Elatha also states the Neamhain is the Caliburn's Goddess. The Milletian is sent to Tara, also known as the city of Caliburn according to Elatha, to gather clues about the Goddess Neamhain in place of Elatha. Cichol then somehow acquires the Caliburn, using Neamhain to fuse it and the Heart of Courcle to destroy the Soul Stream. This, however, was thwarted by the Milletian, and the Caliburn disappears.

Generation 11: Sword of the Gods (Spoilers)

Cichol appears before the Milletian to warn them of an impending disaster: The Caliburn, merged with the Heart of Courcle, may bring the world of Erinn to its end. Cichol only wanted the Caliburn for its power, but had no intentions of destroying the world in the process. According to Cichol, the Caliburn would drain the blood of, not only other Milletians, but the Gods and Fomors as well. He later states the Caliburn caused the plague that exterminated the Parthalonian Race. He fears history will repeat himself and tell the Milletian that by receiving the power of the Gods, they have the obligation to fight for the world. Cichol then says to not forget what he has told the Milletian.

Meanwhile, Tuan mac Cairill, the lone prince of Partholon, spends his efforts to retrieve the Caliburn. Neamhain, too desires the Caliburn as she believes it is the key to restoring Tir Na Nog. The Caliburn goes a process of transformation as the Generation goes on; according to the Goddess Morrighan, Caliburn has endured many different forms, which caused it to grow unstable. Buchanan supports this statement, stating that Caliburn is actually a living being. He also states that ancient magic was used by the Partholons in order to make and control the Caliburn, however this magic was lost with time.

Eventually, it became Brionac, the Sword of the Gods, and comes into the possession of Aer, however she cannot touch it as it cannot be controlled. Jenna eventually appeals to Aer on Ceo Island, demanding the sword; Aer warns Jenna that the Brionac will bring nothing but the darkness of the dark sun. Jenna ignores the warning; the Milletian and Cichol arrive stating that Neamhain's plans for Tir Na Nog's revival would actually lead to the destruction of the world. Jenna does not heed his warning and uses the ancient Partholonian magic to call forth the true power of Brionac and strikes Cichol, killing him in the process, and shortly leaves afterward. Before he dies, he lends his power to the Milletian and entrusts the future of his race to them.

Jenna delivers the Brionac to Neamhain, who attempts to use it to purify Tir Na Nog, only to be opposed by the Milletian and Leymore. Neamhain defeats Jenna's lover, which in turn causes her to oppose the Goddess. Neamhain remarks that Jenna will regret her decision and flees; Jenna gives the Milletian the Brionac as it will be safer in their hands.

After retrieving Brionac, the Milletian tries to return it back to its altar, but Tuan intercepts them and attempts to take it, but fails. On his second attempt, which is right after the Milletian slays Uroboros and the Altar of Caliburn presents itself, Tuan ambushes the distracted Milletian and is successful, then attempts to use the Caliburn to resurrect his Partholon brethren. However, the Milletian suddenly shimmers with light; Tuan realizes that the Caliburn has accepted them. Refusing to accept this, Tuan attempts to kill the Milletian, but Leymore, Cai, and Jenna arrive in the nick of time to delay Tuan while the Milletian and the Altar of Caliburn merge and then pass on judgment to Tuan, killing him once and for all.

Thus, the Milletian has become the "Guardian of Caliburn", possessing the power of Aton Cimeni himself. However, this causes Morrighan to fear the Milletian.
