Description

A handsome young man is wearing a tailored shirt that makes a shade in sepia color over his lean body. His red hair is contrasting against his pale face and fair skin. Although he's a noble-looking young man, it is difficult to find any facial expression in his face at all. From time to time, he makes a deep breath that sounds more like a sigh.

Rian is Ruairi's younger brother. He is the lord of Emain Macha. He rarely speaks and relies on Esras to relay his will. He can be heard speaking, but she often interrupts him, and Rian simply acknowledges Esras's words.

Past (Spoilers)

Young Rian was chosen to succeed his Father as lord, despite Ruairi being the eldest son. His brother leaves for adventure, leaving Rian with the promise that he will return to help and protect him, no matter how far apart they are. Some time after this, their Father was secretly murdered by Esras and Colbha, and Rian officially became the lord of Emain Macha.

During The Tragedy of Emain Macha, Rian was accidentally struck in the leg by Redire's disarmed sword and passed away from the injury the very same night. However, Esras kept news of his death secret and used forbidden magic to reanimate him. Since the night of the tragedy Rian had noticeably not been himself yet he continued to rule, the townsfolk oblivious to Esras' plot.

Generation 2: Paladin (Spoilers)

The Milletian first formally encounters the young lord to receive a letter of recommendation in order to carry out their Paladin training course. He says nothing, letting Esras speak and handle the affairs. Esras claims that to become a Paladin trainee one must swear their alliegance to The Lord and pay a gold fee.

Rian later appears alongside Esras in Math Dungeon. While defending Triona from the Milletian who was lead to believe they were fighting Fomors in disguise, Ruairi calls out to Rian to stop the attack. Rian does not answer, and Esras orders the trainees to kill both of the Fomor "doppelgangers" on his behalf. Rian watches on in silence as Esras takes Triona hostage and forces Ruairi to surrender in exchange for her life. Despite his willingness to come peacefully, Esras directly attacks Triona and orders Ruairi killed.

During their quest to become a Knight of Light, the Milletian finds themselves involved in an investigation into Esras. As disturbing evidence comes to light of her schemes and goals, concern for the Lord's health and wellbeing grows. Working with Price, the Milletian presents the evidence to Emain Macha Priest James, whose true role is an investigator for Pontiff's Court. They suspect that Esras is using Marionette's Potion to manipulate Rian, and they convince Craig to assist with an investigation. The Milletian is sent to distract Esras, however Esras had become aware of the Milletian's investigation and Rian is nowhere to found. With Rian's whereabouts unknown, Esras flees to Barri Dungeon.

With Tabhartas defeated and the Milletian a newly awakened Paladin, Morgant appears and senses something unusual within the Tabhartas. He breaks open the golem, revealing that Rian was used as a human sacrifice to animate the ancient golem. Ruairi, seeing his brother's body, demands to know who was responsible for his death. Esras pins the blame on the Milletian, and Ruairi identifies the Milletian for their unprovoked attack on Triona back in Math dungeon. Rian's body is destroyed in a subsequent explosion caused by Tabhartas, and Ruairi swears vengeance upon the Milletian before leaving.

Redire tries to comfort the Milletian; Rian's sacrifice was not their failure nor their fault, but Esras reveals Redire was in fact responsible for Rian's death during The Tragedy of Emain Macha, and since that very night he had been nothing more than her puppet for years.

Trivia

• The given name Rían, (pronounced /riːʌn/) contains the Old Irish word for "king", Rí, and the diminuitive suffix -an, giving the name the meaning of Little King.
  • Ruairi and Rian both have names that include the word "King" in Old Irish.
• Rian, just like Esras, can only be met with when the player has Generation 2 active. They are located in a special instance of the throne room.
  • It is possible to set a Warp Imp into that room in order to be able to access the two NPCs outside of Generation 2 afterwards.
• Due to changes implemented with the Genesis update, a significant part of Rian's backstory has been cut from Generation 2. However, once the player has finished G2, the cutscene named "The Tragedy of Emain Macha" shows what happened to Rian that brought him under Esras's care becomes accessible at the Crystal ball.
  • This cutscene was not updated with the Masterpiece update, still using the original translation and no voiceover.
• Rian has an alternative model that is used during scenes where he is seen standing.
  • In the Transformation Diary, Rian's uses his alternative portrait, but not his alternative model.
