Deletion of the page

Fragment of a discussion from Talk:Flameburst

Quite honestly, I don't think any of those should exist. The search bar at the top auto-suggests stuff for you and people should be linking to the correct page name rather than a redirect. Redirects should really only be made for disambiguation pages, alternate names (and I don't mean spaces or no-spaces), or important subsections of existing pages.

The page doesn't hurt anyone, and most people don't type and wait to enter it so I find it quite helpful. I'd like to know why it needs to be deleted though.

Zekki (talk)22:28, 14 April 2014

It hinders the auto-suggest for people who use that instead. For example, before I cleaned them up, I typed in "Fire" just now and it gave me like 4 or 5 redirects to Fireball. That's just silly. Also how do you know "most people" don't type and wait? That sounds like an assumption to me.

Blargel (talk)22:37, 14 April 2014

Alright, have it your way. I've barely done anything and you've already managed to drive me away. I've noticed the helpful bolt redirection pages were removed as well, how wonderful. I can see why so many people let MWW rot after this 5-star treatment. Forgive me for trying to improve this website, oh overlords. Believe me, I won't make that mistake again. I do hope you'll ban me indefinitely for my impertinence.

By the way it looks wonderful now, great job guys.

Wow, jeez. You asked and I gave my reason for removing them and it's not like the pages are lost forever. Also, that sarcasm was completely unnecessary. All of us are trying to improve the wiki in our own way and there are conflicts of interest sometimes. That's why discussion pages exist in the first place.

EDIT: Also, you seem to have the impression that I have more authority than you when it comes to how the wiki should be like. This is not true. I happen to be able to delete pages, but that's about the only thing that makes me special. My opinion on how the wiki should be does not hold any more weight than a normal user's. If people in want the redirects back, then we can restore them.

Stop pyramiding you two...

Anyways, what may be convenient to some, may not be convenient to others. Much like how what one thinks is organized may be cluttered and messy to the other. Blargel is right. There is a lot of redirects where there shouldn't be and where there are redirects, some do not make sense at all and hinders the Auto-Suggest. Besides, all of the skills are currently listed on the front page. It's not hard to scroll down and find it. Not to mention spaceless/lowercase redirects don't exactly help the auto-suggest. If you don't like how things are handled, you are welcome to suggest a better solution than to knock it off with sarcastic comments. Besides...could always remake/restore them.

I'm working on a solution. If anyone knows a decent way to either hide pages from the search or showing the page being redirected to then edit them into this redirect, and add all the redirects back which were recently deleted.

I'm not sure either is possible since the search bar probably only looks at the title of each page. It's definitely worth looking into though. I'll take a stab at it tomorrow after work.

Mediawiki's autocomplete feature (it's called autocomplete apparently, lol) seems to only look at the title of the page and nothing else... More specifically, it does this http://wiki.mabinogiworld.com/api.php?action=opensearch&search=Fire&limit=10&namespace=0&format=jsonfm (example with "Fire" as the search term) which only looks at page titles. It doesn't look like there's a way to make both parties happy right now. :/

Yes, it clutters the Auto-Suggest with terms that are hardly used. And I don't mean the "This page has been accessed X times." That viewcount only increases if you go there without being redirected, or click on it after being redirected.
