Incorrect Data

I don't believe the numbers for Defense/Protection/Magic Defense/Magic Protection are correct. At Rank Novice, a large shield gives 1 extra defense through Shield Mastery, whereas the table says none.

Can someone go through the ranks and get the correct numbers? This is also a good time to verify there are only three types of shields.

Doomsday31415 (talk)14:22, 28 January 2015

I'll take this up when I get home. I have a giant with no shield mastery. I'll rank up shield mastery and record results for each rank with various shields. For the sake of completeness, I will be checking each rank with a Cooking Table, a Spell Book, a Holy Eagle Mask, a Guard Cylinder, a Round Shield, a Kite Shield, and a Vales Shield.

Blargel (talk)15:20, 28 January 2015

Sounds like a plan! Thanks!

Doomsday31415 (talk)15:21, 28 January 2015

Didn't have time for this last night because I got home later than I usually go to bed. I'll try again tonight.

Blargel (talk)11:03, 29 January 2015

Here's the new data.

I had to switch out the kite shield for a tikka shield since I was using a giant. I also didn't have a small shield that wind guard identified as a shield since the round shield was human/elf only. If someone trains shield mastery in the future on a human, please check if the data matches up with the first 4 on that table.

Blargel (talk)12:16, 30 January 2015

Round Shield with Rank 1 Mastery gives me the same values as a Rebis Guard and a Cooking Pot.

However I'm oddly getting 8 more magic defense from all three, as what the JP data says.

Infodude575 (talk)12:45, 30 January 2015

A few things:

  1. The numbers for magic protection are off by one because Blargel's giant had too low intelligence (-1 is displayed as 0).
  2. We suspect the protection, magic defense, and magic protection use fractions, resulting in variance here. I'll confirm this over the weekend.
  3. The fact that defense at rank 1 for a medium shield is 21 is unexpected. We need to research why this is.
Doomsday31415 (talk)15:04, 30 January 2015

About the fractions thing, I confirmed this with the following steps:

  1. Have 154 will, which translates to 14.4 magic defense. This will display as 14 on the char screen.
  2. Equip a cooking table. The char screen displayed 21 magic defense, showing a 7 magic defense increase.
  3. Level up until my will to 155, which translates to 14.5 magic defense.
  4. Observe the total magic defense increase to 22.

This seems to imply that at 14.4 base magic defense , 7.5 magic defense was being added, resulting in 21.9, but displaying rounded down was 21. Increasing my base magic defense to 14.5 caused my total to go to 22.0.

Blargel (talk)15:23, 30 January 2015

So here's what we have:

  1. Large shields grant a certain amount of defense, protection, magic defense, and magic protection for each rank.
  2. Medium shields grant 70% of this.
  3. Everything else grants 50%.
  4. Fractions are combined with fractions from other sources (e.g. will) and rounded down in the display.
  5. Defense is treated like an enchant, thus always rounding down.

Are three tables needed with this? Aside from Rank 1, "70%" and "50%" seem good enough.

Doomsday31415 (talk)15:47, 1 February 2015

Good find. I do believe we should keep the three tables for ease of reading. We don't want the wiki users doing math they don't have to do in order to figure out what their bonuses are or will be. We could add in the extra decimal values to be more accurate though and add a footnote similar to your 4th point.

Talent EXP for Rank 2.

12,000 Talent Exp for rank 2 seems wrong. If I add up my Talent Exp for Close Combat, I'm exactly 5,000 off. Rank 4 is 12,000, Rank 3 is 14,000, then Rank 2 is 12,000 again? Seems weird. Obviously, I can confirm that Rank 1 is 20,000, but I don't remember what the Talent Exp was at Rank 2. I'm pretty sure it has to be 17,000 (although, a 5,000 point jump from 3 to 2 seems excessive when you consider the mere 3,000 point jump from 2 to 1). Can anyone confirm it for me?

TLMike (talk)02:15, 9 February 2014

Wrong data?

So, I got my targe shield here with 3 defense 1 protection and rank 7 shield mastery. It says rank 7 gives 15 defense, 6 protection, 3 magic defense, and 1 magic protection. When I equip my targe shield I gain 16 defense, 8 protection, 2 magic defense, and 1 magic protection. The numbers don't seem to add up, or am I missing something here?

Meru (talk)19:55, 25 September 2013

Ehh check enchants on shield/reforge/Artisan?

まそっぷ ! (talk)21:33, 25 September 2013

No enchants, reforges, or artisans.

Meru (talk)06:48, 26 September 2013

Try checking with another medium shield?

まそっぷ ! (talk)13:06, 26 September 2013

Checked with my 3 defense 2 protection Valkyrie shield. The only thing that changed was 1 more protection from the shield.

Meru (talk)13:58, 26 September 2013

Hmmm, well rank 6 seems to match up, and my 1 extra defense might have been from switching to my bow with its level 10 str reforge, but I'm not sure on that because I think I tested with equipping and unequipping. Darn my bad memory. I'm not sure on those other parts though...

Meru (talk)14:57, 26 September 2013

I think I'll just conclude my stats were weirded out. I just had this thing where I had 1 extra protection on my character screen until I relogged. Then it went away.

Meru (talk)16:04, 26 September 2013

How does the bonus heavy stander stack?

Is it added directly to the shield's bonus or is it multiplicative?

Icerlain (talk)21:07, 19 September 2013

Not quite sure...I've heard a different ping that's similar to guarding with a two-handed sword, even with my 5% melee on avon shield

まそっぷ ! (talk)21:12, 19 September 2013

First, this skill doesn't actually give Heavy Stander. Auto-Defense just negates the stun, its not the same as Passive Defenses.

Secondly, I think its additive. I have no idea how contributing by a percentage works, but it'd be a lot less, like in Music Buff Duration's old case.

And yes Mika, they changed the pinging sound effect for just shields.

Infodude575 (talk)21:22, 19 September 2013

It sounds so off...I miss the old ping already D:...

まそっぷ ! (talk)21:54, 19 September 2013

Personally I don't mind, but the old ping is still there, just not when you have a shield.

Infodude575 (talk)21:57, 19 September 2013

Shield or armor.

DANTE20XX (talk)22:00, 19 September 2013

Trans, don't forget trans.

Infodude575 (talk)22:15, 19 September 2013

Actually I believe if you're transformed but have a shield or armor equipped, you'll still get the new ping sound.

DANTE20XX (talk)22:55, 19 September 2013

The new ping was only there when I did with shield, but just armor and no shield gave me old ping.

Because I don't want to "suddenly" change the table...

A thread, Thread:Talk:Shield Mastery/Because I don't want to "suddenly" change the table..., was moved from here to Talk:Wiki Home. This move was made by LexisMikaya (talk | contribs) on 19 September 2013 at 08:52.

Ineffective Shields

Any idea if this works with ineffective shields? Such as books or the Guard Cylinder?

Pantakeea (talk)07:51, 4 September 2013

Books shouldn't work but I'll get back to you on that. And no, Guard Cylinders are not considered ineffective shields and are considered Medium Shields by Shield Mastery.
