Aleyn, gradually losing his memories, sets off to Dunbarton in search of his father. His first lead is to find the Milletian and look through their memories to see if he couldn't find any clue about his dad's whereabouts. To do so, he tricks the milletian into eating a Monkscrown-laced cookie, and uses a crystal ball to pore through their memories, but with no success. After giving the milletian the antidote, he flees to the Reflection of Rememberance, where Sian and the milletian catch up to him. He pleads to the both of them to help him, as he expects that by the next year, all of his memories will be gone. He admits to the Milletian and Sian that he had made a pact with an unknown voice when he died, in exchange to save his dad, and it causes him to lose his memories.
When trying to find a way to restore memories, the topic of a Memory Cipher comes in; with some help, Aleyn gets an old, tattered scroll restored. When he watches the memories it contains, it brings him to the night of the fire. The truth of the events causes Aleyn to become unstable, and his inner space collapses. The view in the memory gives a clue as to where Aleyn's home is, and so the Milletian goes to Port Cobh and meets with Iwan.
However, after meeting with him, the Milletian learns that Aleyn was in fact Iwan's father, and suffered from Alzheimer's. He needed Iwan to take care of him, as the disease had progressed so far that he thought of himself to be Iwan's son. An unattended kettle, for making Chrysanthemum tea to soothe Iwan's lungs, caused the house fire he died in. His memories, scattered in his own inner space, are retrieved by the Milletian and then returned to him. Now knowing the truth, he was ready to depart to the underworld, but Sian intervenes and allows father and son to meet, albeit not directly. After saying what he wanted to Iwan, that he was fine and not actually at fault for Aleyn's death, Aleyn thanks the milletian, and returns to the underworld.
