However, my friend said only image edits count towards your contributions, is that true?

No, constructive edits on articles count towards contributions. In fact, constructive edits are preferred over image additions.

Too bad I didn't know that a year ago, or I would have been able to make a userpage already. I've been letting others do edits for me. Then again, I don't know that much about wiki editing, and since I'm still learning, it'll take a while before I can add in information myself.
