Damage Reduction for Magical Shields

The Experiment

Background

Magic shields are used to deflect damage away from those protected by the barrier, and instead, the caster of the shield takes the damage. According to internal data from the game itself, magic shields are able to reduce the damage by a certain amount, but the numbers regarding reduction are not in any terms that are readily understandable to the common Mabinogian. This experiment will try to determine by what approximate/exact amount the shield reduces damage.

Icebolt is chosen as the spell under investigation for this experiment due to the stability in regards to the damage done. At ranks 5-3, the difference between min and max damage is at a minimum, a difference of 6 damage. Compare this to Lightning Bolt which has a minimum difference of 39 at Rank F, and similarly for Firebolt with a minimum difference of 18 also at Rank F. Ice Magic Shield, therefore, is the companion shield to be tested.

In order to try to determine a base, there will be two trials done. The first trial will be a control of a sort, while the second trial will determine the damage reduction of the shield.

Trials are done in the Connous Arena in order to preserve pvp scores of both characters. There is the added necessity of paying for Connous Arena Battle Coins and a 5-minute time limit in the rounds, but this is clearly outweighed by the fact that all stats are restored at the end of a round.

Method

  1. In Connous Arena, 100%, player2 will charge all charges of ice bolt (to a maximum of 5).
  2. Player2 will slowly fire each charge at player1 and record the damage with each bolt. Damage will be recorded for 100 bolts. Player1 should heal as necessary with potions after each bolt, depending on how much maximum hp player1 has. Any critical hits should also be noted as they occur.
  3. For the next 100 bolts, player2 will still cast icebolt as previously, but player1 will now raise Ice Magic Shield. If/when the shield falls, player2 MUST wait before shooting bolts at player1. Damage will be recorded as previously for 100 bolts, noting critical hits as they occur.
