Your computer problem
Hmm...I believe one of the following may have happened:
- Your motherboard or motherboard battery is fried.
- One of your memory cards are busted.
- Either your video card and/or RAM are fried.
- Something is wrong with your processors.
- One of your hard drives may have gone bad. (a possible loss of all the data files may happen.)
My only suggestion is to open the casing of your computer and get it checked yourself (if you're a computer genius) OR go to some computer store and have them run a check...as for the fan, I think something might be wrong with it as it normally does not make a loud noise...hopefully some of that will help you out.
first thing first though, check your motherboard and its battery. And should you decide to do it yourself (I don't recommend doing it yourself), remember to not have any static electricity, as it can cause an electrical discharge and totally fry your computer...x.x I've fried 2 computers cause I had static electricity from being on the carpet.
First things first, it's not a computer genius or nerd, it's a geek!
From what you said, Kevin, these are the things I have inferred from it. Correct me if I'm wrong:
- The monitor is on, but nothing is showing
- You know it's not getting to the OS because of some sign that the OS hasn't started up such as a sound
- No external devices are getting powered (eg, mouse; keyboard)
- The PSU is fine because the fans are running
From these information, one or more of these is the problem in order of possibility:
- All processors or graphics cards on your system died. Solution: You will need a new ones
- Something built-in on your mobo died, such as the BIOS chip. This can be caused by dust build-up shorting the contacts or from a power surge. Solution: You will need either a new chip and a soldering iron or a new mobo
- Your RAM died. Solution: See solution for #1
- The BIOS or CMOS firmware got corrupted. Solution: If your mobo has a "BIOS reset" button, use it. If not, see solution for #2
@Lexis
- A computer can still start up with a dead battery, just no settings will be saved such as BIOS settings and system time
- If a hard drive died, the computer can still start up, and optionally enter an operating system as long as a remaining hard drive with a bootloader and OS is still ok
so is your monitor/keyboard acting like the computer is never turned on?
it happened to me month ago and it was fixed after resetting BIOS
- I'm pretty sure that nothing on my motherboard is fried. I see no burn marks of any sort.
- I've tried taking out all of the RAM, plugging the computer back in and listening for beeps. I heard the usual sounds.
- I've tried the power surging which was advice from many parts of google and even my HP Support call.
@Kotarou3,
- Yes.
- Yes. Also, even if I disconnect my HDD, the same thing occurs.
- Yes.
- Yes, although I've read somewhere that fans can still run with a dead PSU. Or was it the other way around...
For the 2nd part...
- Possible that it may be the processor, but highly doubt it is the graphics card. I was going to try switching them around with another processor card I had as a spare. /will try that after this post.
- BIOS chip... Maybe.
- RAM. Probably not.
- Corrupted BIOS/CMOS. I've tried the CMOS Reset, both using the jumpers and removing the CMOS battery, and neither have worked, so it could be(?).
Thanks for the help guys. Much appreciated, but yet to get any absolute solutions. :(
Oh, I also forgot to mention that none of the LED lights on the tower of the computer lights up, although the computer itself is powered.
Today, I removed the graphics card, RAM cards, DVD drive, HDD, processor all at once and tried to turn on the computer. Again the same thing occurs, so now I know it's none of these that cause the problem. I'm assuming that the only things that could be causing this left are the motherboard and the power supply unit. I see nothing wrong with the motherboard at all. It still looks pretty brand new. :\
My computer is still under it's warranty. Does that mean I can get replacement parts for free? o.o
This problem happened to my computer. It was, in fact, the graphics card AND the motherboard... (Though you said above that you removed the graphics card? If you do that, you won't see jack squat on your monitor... unless you replaced it with another one.) Burn marks don't have to be present for your mobo or GPU to be broken. Mine had no visible marks anywhere on EITHER of them, but they were rendered useless by a power surge.
- Your computer is on warranty still. Explain the situation to your customer support agent (If it is a Dell like mine... you spend three hours on the phone, but they ship the parts out the next day) and try to get a refurb/replacement graphics card and motherboard.
- If this doesn't work, talk to their tech support. Think of it this way: The more you guys shoot and miss with replacing parts (for free under warranty), the newer the parts your computer will have when it DOES work. Ehehehe.
But I really think that it is your graphics card from the sound of it. Especially if you have a NVidia card.
From what I've established after a lot of tearing apart of two computers:
These can not be the cause of the problem:
- Processor
- Hard Drive
- Graphics Card
So I read your original description and the replies.
You almost certainly have a dead motherboard.
You're getting power to the fans, which means the PSU is fine. Most of the other symptoms are indicative of dust/debris-related shorts.
Double check all the cabling is snug, too, just in case
Ohhay Kevin! :O
Just adding my two cents. I asked my dad about this, and he immediately deduced that you have a dead motherboard. So one more vote for that! :]
My brother had a similar situation not too long ago: his laptop was basically dead, and his overheated fans were running like crazy and generally being very noisy. We concluded that both his fans and motherboard were pretty much fried. I'm taking the assumption that these two scenarios are somewhat related, so I'll have to agree with everybody else in that your motherboard is broken.
Additionally, you should take advantage of that warranty and get yourself a new fan in addition to a motherboard. It may be toast by now.
Uhhm, stalking you from the shadows? :|

More like avoiding MMOs, lurking Facebook and deviantArt, and playing Homestuck all day. orz orz orz. B-but I'll make (some of) it up! I promise! Just give me a week!
- Classified information! >:]
- Way too embarrassing to reveal because then you would see all my crappy artwork! :c
- Homestuck is amazing. And hilarious :D. It's a parody of text-based adventure games (you know, where you enter commands and stuff), and can be construed as a webcomic of sorts. It's updated really quickly, and has a pretty big fanbase. I suggest you take a look at it; I think you might like it.
Okay this conversation has nothing to do with your busted motherboard anymore :|
