Okay, am I missing something? This skill has a worse area of effect, damage rate, and animation time than a max-ranked chain sweep. Is there any point whatsoever in getting this skill? The only potential benefit I can think of is that it makes you end the animation in a different spot than chain sweep would, but that hardly seems worth it.

Its a movement skill. You move forward about as far as your chain reaches, and it allows you to knock enemies to the side of the middle path. Together with spinning slasher, its actually fairly decent crowd control.
