Category talk:Ineffective Shields
I think we should narrow down this category to things that allow humans and elves use charge but aren't technically shields (i.e. the cooking pot and cooking table), or at the very least make your character do shield animations, that would cover books to. I think something like "left handed tools" would be a better name for this category. --(not-so)Anonymous 14:51, 10 February 2010 (UTC)

Cooking Tools and Spell Books | 1 | 14:18, 27 January 2015 |
No effect with Defense skill? | 2 | 12:00, 27 January 2015 |
Why are they considered ineffective? They're classified as Small Shields by Shield Mastery, can use Charge, and can also run with Renovation Defense skill.
Sure they fit the criteria of providing no base defense/protection stat, hidden defense bonus, or passive defense, but calling them "ineffective" seems inappropriate given the above.
If the cooking tools and spell books are affected by shield mastery, they are classified as shields in the game, albeit ones without defensive stats. I also think we should classify them as shields in the wiki as well, even if they don't seem like shields.
Also, after looking at this category, I don't actually think it's necessary. If we move the cooking tools and spell books out, all the rest are obviously not going to behave like shields.
The above does not seem to be true. I have 117 Defense stat and 0 Protection, an Emerald Golem hit me for 120~ without Defense skill and 40 with, shieldless. With a Reading Book, which keeps me with the same amount of Defense stat, I also took 40 damage with Defense skill.
It was a very small test but if the above were true, my Reading Book Defense should not have protected me anywhere near the Shieldless Defense.
Given that the line was added in 2009, I'd guess it was referring to hidden shield stats. However, Defense skill has only partial involvement in that. The way it's worded makes it sound like the Defense skill does absolutely nothing for ineffectives.
You misunderstand. If an Ineffective Shield gave no defense stat from the skill, I would have taken 40 +65 damage.
