1. Choosing Your First Wines
If you're new to wine, consider starting with something a little sweeter and less bitter.
I recommend a white wine with a strong, fruity fragrance.
Only after you've discovered how delicious white wine can be do I suggest moving on to reds. Here again, I recommend starting with something sweeter, then moving onto the drier reds. In the end, you'll discover you can appreciate the reds that you perhaps once found too bitter to enjoy.
2. Wine Tasting Etiquette
When pouring wine, only fill a third to half of the glass. When you're done pouring, give a slight nod to indicate so to the other party.
It is poor form to drink all your wine in one gulp. Etiquette demands that your host ensure your glass is never empty, so leave a few sips at the bottom to give your host time to refill your glass.
When a lady reaches for her glass, you must raise your glass along with her. However, you do not necessarily have to drink from your glass.
When making a toast, tilt your glass only slightly, enough so the middle of it can kiss the other glasses. Raise your glass as high as the others in your party.
3. Enjoying a Wine's Bouquet
When smelling the bouquet of a wine that was just poured for you, do not swirl the glass. Simply lift the glass close to your nose and breathe it in.
You may think, "Don't all wines smell the same? They were all made from grapes, so shouldn't they all smell like grapes?"
Not so! The bouquet of wines made in the same way at the same vineyard can vary simply because they were produced in different months!
Breathe in a few different wines, and see for yourself. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
