- Transferring Spirit Memory: A Guide -

1. Preface

Legends tell of mighty weapons, wielded by only the greatest of warriors, that possess a unique power all their own. Indeed, there are ancient magics that can infuse a weapon with a powerful spirit.

We call such weapons Spirit Weapons. Whether the Spirit Weapons of today are the same as those from the legends, though, we may never know.

A major point of confusion is that the legends speak of Spirit Weapons having very different properties than ours do now. It is impossible to know if this is exaggeration, misinterpretation, or the truth.

In the end, we simply know very little about the Spirits that inhabit these weapons.

So many questions remain unanswered. Where do the Spirits come from? Where do they go when they leave a weapon? Why is their memory tied to the weapon? And why do they tirelessly seek knowledge, when they are doomed to lose it eventually?

My research originally aimed to answer these questions. Spirit Transfer Magic is merely an incidental result of my work, but I have written this book to help others in uncovering the secrets of the Spirits.

2. Drawbacks of Spirit Weapons

Spirits grow by absorbing information from objects around them. As they grow, they increase the power of the weapons they inhabit.

However, a great deal of effort is required to help a Spirit Weapon reach its full potential. It is a long process, and the benefits may not be apparent for some time

In truth, many feel that raising Spirit Weapons is a burden. There are two main reasons for this.

First, since memories are stored in the weapon itself, all accumulated knowledge is lost once the Spirit leaves the weapon.

Any weapon, Spirit or otherwise, wears out over time, and must one day be discarded.

Granted, there exists a method for repairing Spirit Weapons. However, just as the greatest blacksmith can make a mistake, so too can Spirit Weapon repairs leave imperfections. Over time, these flaws can accumulate, and leave the weapon unusable.

Over such a span of time, the Spirit is bound to become quite powerful, but would then be trapped in a useless weapon.

Second, a wielder can only have one Spirit contracted to them at a time.

This will eventually leave the wielder with the difficult choice of keeping a powerful Spirit in a useless weapon, or canceling their contract to make a new one with a young, weak Spirit.

Either way, it would seem that all the effort of raising a powerful Spirit is destined to be wasted.

Of course, this does not consider the time the wielder has with their powerful Spirit before the weapon gives out. However, it is still enough for many to shy away from using Spirit Weapons.

3. Principles of Spirit Weapon Repairs

The greatest desire of weapon-bound Spirits is gain as much knowledge as possible. To that end, they transform and consume nearby objects, to learn and grow from.

This becomes immediately apparent when repairing Spirit Weapons.

Consider a weapon at maximum Proficiency of the same type as one's current Spirit Weapon.

Using Spirit Liqueur on this weapon awakens primes it with spiritual energy, and revives dormant memories of raising its Proficiency. This is the process that prepares a weapon as a vessel for a Spirit.

Such prepartaion allows the Spirit to absorb the new weapon, and use those awakened memories to restore its own form.

It is significant how natural this process is. Once the Spirit Liqueur is applied, the Spirit carries out the rest of the process itself, with no need of assistance or interruption.

This raises an important question.

Why does a permanent loss occur from such a natural process?

Since this topic relates directly to Spirit Transfers, I will explore this in the next chapter.

4. Theories on Spirit Transfer

We have discussed how the process of repairing a Spirit Weapon is as natural as healing a wound, yet it often results in a permanent loss.

This loss occurs when the prepared weapon has not accumulated enough Proficiency. This small difference interrupts the mental communion between the weapon and the wielder.

Permanent loss is tragic, but it can teach us a valuable lesson about Spirits, if we know what to look for.

We must focus on the reason for the loss. It is the difference in Proficiency that causes it, so our next step is to understand why. What is it about Proficiency that makes it so important to this process?

Given the nature of Spirits and Proficiency, we can infer that the Spirit needs Proficiency to fully identify with the new weapon.

This means that the Spirit restores itself using the information from the new weapon. If that information is incomplete, then the Spirit's restoration will also be incomplete.

In other words, without the information from complete Proficiency, the Spirit cannot tell what is missing. It would be the same if the weapon were damaged or otherwise incomplete, based on information alone.

Once the repair process is finished, the Spirit can become aware of its condition, but until then, it has no way of knowing if it has complete information or not.

With this in mind, it would seem possible to affect the process by manipulating the information the Spirit perceives.

This is exactly how the Spirit Transfer process was created.

5. Tranquil Spirit Liqueur

Tranquil Spirit Liqueur is a special potion that put Spirits into a deep trance.

The benefit of such a potion might not be immediately apparent, but an interesting theory has arisen from it.

If a Spirit's entire memory exists on a weapon, then the Spirit must be in a child-like state when separated from it or first contracted.

Still, even the youngest Spirits can communicate, and even possess limited memories.

It stands to reason, then, that Spirits can retain certain memories in their child-like state. Based on this hypothesis, I created Tranquil Spirit Liqueur to test how much of their memory could be kept.

When used in a special magical ritual, this potion puts a Spirit into a deep trance, but leaves its subconscious untouched. This loosens the Spirit's attachment to its weapon.

Once in a trance, I attempted to hypnotize the Spirit, and have it trace its own memories. Sadly, this method ended in failure.

The key to remember is that Spirits can be hypnotized while in their trance state. By exploring this fact further, I was finally able to devise a method for transferring a Spirit and its memories to a new weapon.

6. Spirit Transfer Magic

As indicated before, the first step of Spirit Transfer Magic is to put the Spirit into a deep trance.

You must then apply Spirit Liqueur to the existing Spirit Weapon, and apply large amounts of Spirit Weapon Restoration Potion on the new weapon for the Spirit. This prepares both weapons for the ritual.

The Spirit Liqueur makes the Spirit extremely active, but because it has been placed in a trance, only its subconscious will remain active.

In this state, the Spirit's mind is very susceptible to suggestion and illusion. This is the key.

At this point, the Spirit should perceive the ritual as a repair, and attempt to absorb the new weapon. It is very important that you guide the Spirit through the early parts of this process slowly.

As soon as the Spirit begins to merge with the new weapon, halt the process and prepare for the next step.

At this point, you must alter the ritual to convince the Spirit that the new weapon is its home, and the Spirit's original weapon is the material to be absorbed.

Once that is done, the rest of the process should take care of itself, and the Spirit will be housed in the new weapon.

The Spirit's heightened subconscious is what transfers the memories to the new weapon, once it believes that the new weapon is its home.

This process is not without its risks, of course. Spirits are very vulnerable when in an absorbing state, and doubly so when in a trance.

Spirit Weapon Restoration Potions are what keep the Spirit from perishing, so do not forget to apply several to the new weapon before starting the process. .

Just keep in mind that the Spirit is extremely unstable during this process, and everything must be done at a relaxed pace to avoid overloading it.

After all, the Spirit will percieve massive damage to its body as a part of this process, and must be allowed to cope with it naturally. .

Please note, however, that this method cannot make a perfect transfer.

There are two reasons for this. For one, the Spirit must be fully connected with its weapon to access its memories. Additionally, not all memories can be pulled from the original weapon.

After the transfer, any memories left behind on the original weapon are lost. The Spirit cannot transfer them all, as that would do irreversible damage to its form during the transfer.

Allowing a Spirit to completely melt down causes it to be lost, after all.

This is why these transfers can only be done while the Spirit still has some of its form. That form that remains contains memories that will not be carried over.

The power that the Spirit loses is proportionate to the amount of memories lost. If there exists a way to separate out the remaining memories within a Spirit Weapon, then a perfect Spirit Transfer could be possible.

The moment the Spirit is transferred, additional absorptions will cease. This will leave behind the original weapon.

Without the Spirit, the original weapon has no special traits. Giving the weapon to the Spirit to feed on will have no unique effect.

7. Conclusion

You should now know everything necessary for a successful Spirit Transfer. With enough research and practice, these transfers should be easy enough to perform.

Though I did not start my research with such a goal in mind, I am very satisfied with the results.

I have experienced the tragedy of loss, and I know very well how painful the severance of relationships can be.

If people can use this magic to preserve their Spirit relationships, then I feel I have done my part.

I will close this book with a simple warning.

Do not perform this ritual lightly. If something were to go wrong, it would endanger not only the Spirit, but those involved in the process. Study and practice before attempting this in earnest.
