- Lugh, the Hero of Mag Tuireadh -
By Mian

Preface

We humans have long dwelled in the blessed land of Erinn, privileged to build our legacy upon its fertile hills and plains. Still, our history has not been without its trials: our resolve has been tested time and again by natural disasters, and by the brutality of the Fomors.

Having at last sufficient force of arms to safeguard our people, and with Fomor attacks far less common now than in times past, some have come to regard the threat posed by the Fomors as ancient history. However, we must never forget the innumerable lives lost battling the Fomors--sacrifices that have afforded us the freedom we enjoy today.

This volume, written so that our history might always be remembered, tells of the great leader who secured victory for mankind in the Second Battle of Mag Tuireadh. Herein shall his virtues be extolled, and the richness of life his triumph won for us be made plain.

I pray that the protection of Lugh, the great Knight of Light, will shine upon all who read these words and show due reverence for this great leader of men.

Lugh Lamhfada

Lugh, the Knight of Light, fought against the Fomors in the Second Battle of Mag Tuireadh. While all know that his triumph in that conflict brought victory to mankind, it may come as a surprise that there are no written records of his birth or upbringing.

Some claim that this is because he had accomplished no deeds worthy of renown before his heroic feats as a warrior of the kingdom, but others believe that any documents referencing his youth or prior accomplishments were lost along with the multitude of records burned or otherwise destroyed at the time of the First Battle of Mag Tuireadh.

The earliest extant records we still possess date to after the First Battle of Mag Tuireadh. These documents make mention of him appearing in Erinn during the reign of King Bres. Even from the outset, it is clear he was greatly admired for his valor and for his exceptional skill in combat. These records are also notable for being the first to document Lugh's full name, "Lugh Lamhfada". Given that his life before this point belongs to the realm of folktales and hearsay, it is not surprising that some believe Lugh was sent at the behest of the goddess of war to deliver mankind.

Lugh, who served as a military officer during the tyrannical rule of King Bres, eventually caught the eye of the wise King Nuadha Airgetlam, he of the Silver Arm. Fighting in many pitched battles against the Fomors, he was eventually raised up to the position of commander over all the Tuatha de Danann forces.

In the climactic Second Battle of Mag Tuireadh, Lugh faced down and slew Balor, the Lord of the Fomors, bringing to an end the long war between mankind and the Fomors.

We would be wise, then, to consider the factors that helped him to achieve total victory in this historic campaign.

1. He was ever vigilant and prepared
Not only did Lugh discern that even the First Battle of Mag Tuireadh was fomented by the Fomors, he also predicted that King Bres, exiled when Nuadha reclaimed the throne, would eventually lead the Fomors against mankind. Armed with this foresight, he continued to train the Tuatha de Danann army during the period of reconstruction that followed that battle. Some of the royal advisors were displeased with Lugh's handling of these affairs, but when one considers that the Fomors eventually launched an all-out assault on the human kingdom in the Second Battle of Mag Tuireadh, one must acknowledge Lugh's startling clairvoyance and the wisdom of his preparedness.

2. When war broke out, his conviction never wavered
When war with the Fomors loomed once more, many of the King's counselors advised him to seek a treaty with their longtime foes, and even to prepare an offering of many gifts as a show of good faith. King Nuadha himself seemed to agree with this course of action. However, in his wisdom, Lugh realized that the Fomor assaults were not launched in the hope of plunder or tribute. Their offensives were part of a larger strategic push to entirely annihilate the human race, who had been weakened both by their losses in the First Battle of Mag Tuireadh and by the reign of King Bres in the years that followed. Lugh's intuition was proven once more when the wizard Jabchiel's treachery and role in instigating the conflict was discovered.

3. He adapted his tactics to suit the needs of the moment
Despite Lugh's extensive preparations and his continued training of the kingdom's forces, the human army was still significantly outmatched by the Fomor army. Even had the size of their forces been equal, humans would have still been at a disadvantage against the Fomors. But with the Fomors' numbers far exceeding those of the humans' army, the Tuatha de Danann had little hope of surviving the battle, let alone winning it. Lugh understood the disadvantages his army faced, however, and overcame them through judicious use of timing and terrain in the movements of his troops, which directly contributed to the defeat of the Fomors' forces.

4. He united the races
The strength of the Fomors during this period was greater than at any time during their long conflict with mankind. Despite Nuadha's heroic feats, it seemed impossible to do much more than put a dent in their forces. It was at this very juncture that the treacherous wizard Jabchiel began calling down Moon Stones from Eweca to deliver a lunar assault to whole regions of Erinn. Beset on every side, the human race's future seemed bleak indeed. However, Lugh was able to bring together the Spirits, Imps, and even the Fir Bolgs, who had fought against the Tuatha de Danann in the previous war, persuading them to stand together against the Fomor onslaught. The shining armor Lugh wore was made with the blessing of the Spirits, as was his weapon, the Brionac. Without the Spirits' aid, it would likely have been impossible to gain victory in the conflict, even with Lugh's tireless preparation and leadership.

In the wake of mankind's victory over the Fomors, Lugh, hailed as the Knight of Light, went on to succeed the fallen Nuadha. Becoming the monarch of the Aliech Kingdom, he would rule over the Tuatha de Danann.

Though his accomplishments as king in the years that followed were no less worthy of praise, his image would forever linger in the minds of his subjects as a courageous leader in a time of great strife. They would always remember him as the Knight of Light, his countenance fierce and determined as he took the field in his gleaming armor.

His Legacy

History records Lugh's many accomplishments during his reign as monarch. However, one day, he simply abdicated the throne and disappeared. But even though he may have left the stage of history, he will forever remain a hero in the hearts of his people--the shining Knight of Light. Many believe with truest faith that when the shadows loom long over the Tuatha de Danann once more, Lugh will appear again to lead and rescue mankind.
