Mabinogi World Wiki talk:Wiki Server News

From Mabinogi World Wiki

Discussion about the wiki's underlying infrastructure.

Wishlist

One-time purchases (with periodic ongoing maintenance purchases)

  • Multi-core/multi-processor (either or both) 64-bit hardware, preferably server-grade hardware
  • 4GB and greater to go with it (Yay, no PAE needed.)
  • More disk capacity (Wiki logs grow quickly. VERY quickly.)

Done at long bloody last!

Periodic purchases

  • My own colo cabinet space (will NOT be cheap)
  • My own connectivity to go with it (will DEFINITELY not be cheap)

To-do list

Ongoing

  • Assist in general house- and peace-keeping activities.
  • Keep MediaWiki and loaded extensions up to date.
  • Evaluate other MediaWiki extensions for added/enhanced functionality.
  • Investigate moving databases to an external server. Would reduce the site's memory footprint considerably (MySQL is a memory hog). Done. However now, its purpose has shifted to aiding in isolating a periodic loading problem. Also done. The issue just needs bigger iron thrown at it. This wiki is vastly outstripping my machine's ability to sustain it.

Future

  • Investigate integration with forums, i.e. forum creds can be used to access and change the wiki. For purpose, get recent snapshots of both sites' HTML/PHP and SQL content and set up and evaluate on a test server.
    • NOTE: This will require that the forums migrate to the same machine as the wiki, a decision the mods must come to an agreement upon.

Miscellaneous

I just templatized the bulletins so then things just magically fall into place. Instead of moving masses of text from page to page, I'm creating pages which change a lot, then transcluding them into pages which change progressively less.

About null-routing

I hope this is in the right place :O

Well, i wanna ask do you use iptables to null-route IP's? --Kotarou3 08:19, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

Sorry about the belated response, but I do not use iptables but route(8) with the "reject" target. It is far cheaper to use the system routing table than it is to use something finer-grained. As such, it is far more brutal to the user. --Irjustman 20:37, 16 May 2010 (UTC)
